Set a trip budget you'll actually stick to

Five categories, a buffer, and a monthly savings target.

6 min read

Most trips go over budget in the small daily costs, not the big bookings. A simple budget with a buffer keeps the whole trip in view.

The five categories

  1. Getting there: flights, gas, tolls, trains, parking
  2. Lodging, including taxes and fees
  3. Food: groceries, meals out and snacks
  4. Things to do: tickets, tours, entry fees
  5. Getting around: local transport, rideshares, parking

Then add

  • A buffer of around 10% for the unexpected
  • A monthly savings target: total divided by months until you go
  • A daily spending amount for the trip itself
