Drive or fly? Road trip costs, counted
Gas is only part of the cost of driving.
Driving often wins for families and groups, and flying often wins for long distances and solo travelers. Count both properly before you decide.
Driving costs
- Gas: miles divided by your car's mpg, times the price per gallon
- Tolls and parking
- Wear on your car
- Extra nights in hotels on the way
- Food on the road
Flying costs
- Fares for everyone, with bags and seats
- Getting to and from airports, and airport parking
- A rental car or transport at the other end
