Rental cars: the real cost

Insurance, fuel, tolls and airport fees add up.

5 min read

The daily rate is only part of a rental car's price. Extras at the counter can nearly double it.

Before the counter

  • Check whether your own car insurance covers rentals
  • Check your credit card's rental car coverage and its rules
  • Compare airport and off-airport locations; airport pickups often carry extra fees
  • Look up how tolls work at your destination

At pickup and drop-off

  • Photograph the car all round, inside and out
  • Decline extras you don't need
  • Refill fuel yourself rather than prepaying, unless you'll return it empty
  • Get a receipt when you return it
