Hotel and rental fees, explained
Resort fees, cleaning fees, parking and taxes.
A room's nightly price can be far from what you pay. Mandatory fees, parking and local taxes add up, especially on short stays.
Fees to look for
- Resort, destination or amenity fees
- Cleaning and service fees on vacation rentals
- Parking, sometimes charged per night
- Local occupancy taxes
- Early check-in and late check-out fees
Total price rules
A federal rule that took effect in 2025 requires hotels and short-term rentals to show the total price, including mandatory fees, up front. Still compare the final price at checkout, and note optional extras like parking.
